Dr. Doug Parrett is currently serving as the Interim Head of Animal Sciences.  He previously served as Interim Head of Animal Sciences from 2012-2014. He served for over 34 years as a faculty member in Animal Sciences. An outstanding teacher and extension Beef Cattle Specialist he also served as Associate Head of Animal Sciences for 5 years before assuming the Interim Head role.

Parrett received all of his college degrees from the University of Illinois, receiving his PhD in Animal Sciences in 1979. He taught a number of courses focusing on meat animal evaluation and beef cattle production and management. His extension programs focused on sustainable beef production strategies and improved management technologies for high quality beef production. His research addressed carcass characteristics in beef cattle of different breed types. He is a nationally respected beef cattle judge having officiated national shows for 8 breeds of cattle in 34 states and internationally he has judged in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Parrett has been recognized with 16 college, campus and national teaching awards and received the American Society of Animal Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award in 2000. His extension programs were also well recognized and he received the first C-FAR Governor’s Award in Illinois in 2008. In 2009 he was presented the prestigious Paul A. Funk Award by the College of ACES. In 2017 he received the American Society of Animal Sciences Teaching Fellow Recognition for Outstanding Contributions to the Livestock Industry and the Society.
