Cattle Feeding Short Course Offered

URBANA - Cattle feeders can keep abreast of industry changes to enhance their management and marketing practices by attending the 2006 Great Lakes Professional Cattle Feeding and Marketing Short Course on January 23 and February 6, 2006, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau Building.

"Offering a short course like this one allows us to bring in out-of-state speakers to get a different perspective," said Richard Knipe, University of Illinois Extension educator in Animal Systems/Beef. "The two-session format also allows for more in-depth discussion of a topic. In this case, the first one is management and nutrition and the second is marketing."

During the first session on January 23, Jim Hilker from Michigan State University will answer the question, What impact will the expanding ethanol industry have on future corn prices and what is distillers grains with solubles worth? Kip Karges from Dakota Gold Research, Kevin Vuilleumier from the Environmental Protection Agency and John Wagner from Colorado State University will also present during session one.

The second session on February 6th will be more marketing oriented. Cimeron Frost from the Illinois Beef Association will give an update on the National ID program. Other presenters in session two include Ron Lemenager from Purdue University and John Lawrence from Iowa State University. The session will conclude with an outlook on cattle prices for 2006 by Jim Hilker.

The registration fee is $30 for the two sessions, and is due by January 17. The Great Lakes Professional Cattle Feeding and Marketing Short Course is a product of the Five State Beef Initiative, a cooperative effort to strengthen economic opportunities for the eastern Corn Belt's beef industry by providing added consumer value through a responsive production, marketing and information system.
