Thanksgiving Meal Tips

URBANA - If you're starting to plan the family Thanksgiving meal, a good place to begin is University of Illinois Extension's Turkey for the Holidays ( website.

"This website includes information on everything from selecting a turkey to cooking techniques to leftovers," explained Jane Scherer, U of I Extension urban programs specialist and director of its websites.

"One especially important feature deals with safety, covering proper thawing, cooking, and stuffing guidelines, as well as use of a meat thermometer and storage of leftovers."

Another portion of the side deals with side dishes to complement the main course bird.

"The site also has a listing of turkey farms," she added.

For the youngsters (and adults who want some fun facts) there are sections dealing with the history of Thanksgiving and facts about turkeys.

The "Turkey Fun" section includes links to live turkey gobbles and information on turkey crafts and even turkey games.
