Building careers in ag: ALEC students help unveil new James F. Evans Center at AgRally

One thing the College of ACES is never short on is hands-on experience. Last week, Jersey Hesse and Erica Johnson, both Agricultural Communications program students, were invited to Fort Worth, Texas, to attend AgRally 2024 -- a celebration of National Ag Day -- to participate in the launch of the new James F. Evans Global Center for Food and Agricultural Communications, live on RFD-TV.

How My Roots Run Deep at the University of Illinois

The purpose of roots is to act as a foundation: holding a plant straight and stable, and absorbing water from the ground to help it grow. The world's deepest root system reaches 400 feet under the ground. The deeper and larger the root system of a tree, the more strength the tree has to grow and spread its branches.

ACES alum uses farm management for community impact

URBANA, Ill. – It did not take long for alum Sophia Hortin (ACES ’23) to use her degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to make an impact in her role managing Clearview Farm and its popular sunflower fields in Northwest Champaign.

Bringing cells to life … and to Minecraft: $30 million NSF grant to support whole-cell modeling

Beckman researchers and collaborators, including Eric Morgan of NRES and ALEC, received $30 million from the U.S. National Science Foundation to establish the NSF Science and Technology Center for Quantitative Cell Biology. The center will develop whole-cell models to transform our understanding of how cells function and share that knowledge with diverse communities through the popular computer game Minecraft.

How I Ended Up at the College of ACES

Like most students, my desired career path changed several times from kindergarten to college application day. From a teacher to a nutritionist, I eventually decided I wanted to pursue a career in communications where I could interact with other people.
