New Opportunities

Without question the past several weeks have been greatly different from the leisurely summer that I had anticipated. True, I had for some time felt a sense that I should "move on" and in so doing open the door for new leadership in the College. That opportunity came from a completely unanticipated direction when I received an early-evening telephone call asking me to serve as Interim Provost for the University. My new assignment provides a great opportunity to engage with very talented people across the many dimensions of our campus.

When does/did the transition occur? Effective July 1 my appointment became 100% Interim Provost Designate, 0% Dean of ACES. A few days later Dr. Robert Hauser became 100% Interim Dean Designate. Over the past several weeks we have worked together to effect a smooth transition. Dr. Hauser is now responsible for the College, although we do consult on a daily basis. The "official" change date is August 17th.

As Dean I had the good fortune of working with a group of Associate Deans, Department Heads and College Staff who were very much a team dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and extension. My job was made simple by those around me. I owe a great deal to the members of the ACES leadership team, past and present. The College of ACES is fortunate to have a host of great employees both on campus and at our many locations around the state. It doesn't stop there, however--the members of the ACES Alumni Association are truly dedicated to this College, and its students and programs.

Finally . . . thanks to all for your support and friendship over the past eight years. It has been a wonderful experience. I wish the best of success to Dr. Hauser in his time as interim, to the next permanent Dean of ACES, and to the students, staff faculty and alumni who make the College of ACES what it is.
