Digestibility of calcium varies throughout gestation in sows, study says

URBANA, Ill. – Swine diets are primarily formulated and tested in growing pigs. Studies show the ideal ratio of nutrients, specifically the ratio of calcium to phosphorus, changes slightly but predictably as pigs progress through the growing stage. What’s not well-understood is how calcium requirements change throughout gestation. A recent publication in the Journal of Animal Sciences reveals an important pattern of lower digestibility in gestating sows.

Cattle producers could maximize profits using progressive limit feeding

URBANA, Ill. – Beef cattle producers could see greater profits in the finishing period with progressive limit feeding, according to research from University of Illinois scientists.

To help keep cattle healthy as they enter a feedlot, producers often feed less, or “limit-feed,” for a short time to allow the animal to adjust to the feedlot diet. The new research looks at the concept of progressively reducing feed intake throughout the diet-transition period, with the goal of maintaining a constant body size.

Gundersen invited by World Bank to present on SNAP to Government of Egypt

By invitation from the World Bank, Dr. Craig Gundersen, ACES Distinguished Professor in the department of agricultural and consumer economics in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES), recently presented on America’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to Egyptian governmental officials.  

“Egypt is thinking about a new approach to food assistance, and they are interested in SNAP as a model,” Gundersen explained.

Study shows gut microbes are related to mood

URBANA, Ill. – Having a crummy day at work or feeling overwhelmed at home? Your gut microbes may be related to those negative emotions, a new University of Illinois study suggests.

In the study, published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience, nutirition researchers looked at associations between diet, bacteria in the gut microbiota, and symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression in otherwise healthy adults.
