The College of ACES is here to help support the academic wellness of each student in the College of ACES. Part of this includes understanding the academic guidelines and policies as set by our campus and the College of ACES.
Academic standing reviews are conducted at the end of each semester (spring, summer, fall) based on the criteria identified on part 1, article 3-110 of the Student Code. Students are considered in good academic standing when they meet or exceed all required university and program-specific GPA standards, satisfy any additional program requirements, and make satisfactory progress toward degree completion.
Students can access their final grades online via UIUC Self Service, typically 1 week after the end of finals. An academic status of "under review" will be displayed until the college has reviewed academic standing for all students in the college. Illinois is on a four-point grading system that includes both plus (+) and minus (-) grades. The Grade Point Scale can be found on the Registrar's website. Students can utilize the GPA Calculator to predict their GPA for the semester.
The College of ACES typically will complete reviews in late May (spring semester), mid August (summer semester) and early January (fall semester). The College of ACES sends notices to all students on academic warning or drop status via Secure Message Delivery which sends a notice to the student's Illinois email account. Students that have previously been on academic warning and have moved to good standing will be notified of their updated student standing as well. The Secure Message Delivery system will continue to deliver a message every 30 days to the student's Illinois email until the message is received and acknowledged (link to acknowledge the email is located at the bottom of the email).
Academic Warning and Drop Status
Academic warning
Academic warning status serves as a notice to students that poor academic performance or failure to make satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion may jeopardize their continued enrollment in future semesters and/or their ability to graduate from the University of Illinois.
Your academic standing will not appear on your permanent record. Not maintaining a GPA of at least 2.0 may affect your ability to participate in University of Illinois, state or federal financial aid programs. If your financial aid is affected, you will receive a separate notice from the Office of Student Financial Aid. Please read that material carefully to learn how this affects your eligibility, steps you can take, and options for filing an appeal.
Low GPA warning - Code 1A
A student whose cumulative University GPA is 2.00 or better and who does not earn at least a 2.00 average in any semester is placed on low GPA warning. These students must earn an overall, Illinois, and semester GPA greater than 2.0 (or higher if required by your major) to be removed from low GPA academic warning.
No additional requirements are expected of students on low GPA warning. We encourage all students to meet regularly with their academic advisor on course planning. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of available campus resources to support their success.
If a student's GPA satisfies the qualifications of their low GPA warning notice and continues to make satisfactory academic progress, that student will return to good academic standing for the following semester.
Academic Warning - Code 1P
Students with a term, Illinois, and/or overall GPA below 2.0 are placed on academic warning. Academic warning identifies a specific grade point average that a student is expected to earn in their next semester of enrollment on a minimum of 12 graded credit hours applicable towards their degree. Generally, a student's Illinois and semester term GPA must all be greater than 2.0 (or higher if required by your major) to be removed from academic warning.
Students placed on academic warning are required to enter into an advising agreement that stipulates specific requirements they must meet in the next term of enrollment including mandatory academic advising meetings with their advisor. Failure to complete required items will result in a hold being placed on the student's account, preventing future course registration.
If a student does not satisfy the GPA requirement stipulated in their academic warning notice, they are at risk of academic drop status.
Academic drop
Drop rules are based on University semester GPA, University cumulative GPA, or combined all-University cumulative GPA and transfer GPA (used only if the transfer average is below 2.00) as well as making satisfactory academic progress towards degree. The applicable GPA will depend on the student's current status and whether the student has completed work elsewhere. These drop rules may be waived when the College of ACES judges that the student's scholastic record warrants such action.
Code 17:
A student who fails to earn at least a 1.0 (D) University GPA in any academic semester (not including summer session) will be dropped.
A student on academic warning who fails to meet that warning level will be dropped, unless they has achieved at least a 2.00 or better university GPA for that semester, and their cumulative GPA is at least a 2.00.
Appealing an academic drop status
Students who are dropped from the college for academic deficiencies are informed of this action via Secure Message Delivery from the College of ACES to a student’s Illinois email account. Students who are eligible to appeal their drop status will be explicitly informed of this option and given information about the process and deadline. Late appeals will not be considered. Decisions of the committee are final and there is no further appeal option.
Students that are on academic drop status are asked to take time away from the University for a minimum of 1-2 semesters. Stipulations to meet re-entry requirements will be provided to the student on an individual basis if an academic drop appeal is not approved.
