ABE alumni award winner James A. Holmes solves practical problems, pays it forward

James A. (Jim) Holmes learned early that when something breaks, you figure out how to fix it.

Growing up on a small Angus cattle farm near Dunlap, Illinois, Mr. Holmes was surrounded by machinery, livestock, and the everyday challenges that come with keeping a farm running.

“If something broke, you fixed it with a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a hammer,” Mr. Holmes said with a laugh.

That practical mindset led him to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, his in-state land-grant university. In 1968, Mr. Holmes earned a bachelor’s degree in power and machinery management, a program that has evolved into today’s Engineering Technology and Management for Agricultural Systems program in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, part of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences and The Grainger College of Engineering.

Nearly six decades later, Mr. Holmes is being recognized as a 2026 ABE Distinguished Alumni Award recipient for a career defined by technical expertise, resourcefulness, and service.

Soon after graduation, Mr. Holmes joined the U.S. Navy and discovered that what he had learned at Illinois translated well beyond the farm. His education had taught him not only how machinery worked, but how to understand systems, approach problems, and find practical solutions.

“The university gave me a wide variety of skills helpful to my success in the Navy,” he said. “Whether it was adjusting a diesel engine or even making sure you had enough food on board for a 90-day deployment.”

Over 15 years in the Navy, Mr. Holmes rose from diesel mechanic to supply officer. After leaving active service, he spent another two decades as a civilian contractor providing logistics support to the Navy.

Today, Mr. Holmes sees that foundation becoming even more important as agriculture and the machinery that powers it grow increasingly sophisticated. He marvels at the technological leap from his family’s Farmall F20 to today’s GPS-guided tractors and AI-enabled systems.

“Students need the structure, skill set, and insight to make modern machinery run — and to know when the computer isn’t right,” he said. “You still have to understand the math and science behind the answer.”

Mr. Holmes and his wife, Ellen, are helping ensure future students have the opportunity to build that same foundation. Together, they established the James A. and Ellen C. Holmes Family Scholarship Fund to support students with financial need in ABE.

Mr. Holmes’ advice to today’s students reflects the same curiosity and practical mindset that have guided his life and career.

“Know what you want to do and learn everything you can about it,” he said. “Have fun, sure, but stay focused. You’re at U. of I. to discover things you won’t learn any other way.”

The ABE Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 2008 and the Young Alumni Achievement Award was introduced in 2020 to recognize alumni who have achieved significant success and distinction in their careers. Awardees are selected for their contributions to their professions and the lasting impact they have made in their fields. Learn more at abe.illinois.edu/alumni-giving/alumni.
