Harvest Open House offers family-fun learning

Looking for a family-friendly event? Check out the fifth annual Crop Sciences Harvest Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 26 at the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center.

Hosted by the Department of Crop Sciences and the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Harvest Open House will feature interactive exhibits, activities, games and prizes, food trucks, and more.

“The Harvest Open House is a wonderful way to spend the day with family while exploring the exciting and ever-changing world of agriculture,” said Miranda Combs, a crop sciences administrator who helped organize the open house. “With hands-on activities, interactive learning, and fun for all ages, the event brings the classroom to life. We look forward to bringing the excitement of crop sciences to our community!”

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Morrow Plots — the oldest crop rotation experiment in the world — the event will offer shuttle rides to the plots, where attendees can enjoy a brief presentation on their history, followed by a guided tour. Attendees can also learn about recent advances in agricultural production science. 

There will be an inflatable obstacle course, a mobile petting zoo, wagon rides, a selfie station, and a kids' craft table. 

Adam Davis, head of crop sciences, said, “It’s an amazing opportunity to be able to learn alongside your family and friends on a fall day, and we welcome anyone interested. Come on out.”

Harvest Open House attractions will be located at the Crop Sciences Research and Education Center at 4202 S. 1st St. in Champaign. This event is free to attend; food will be available for purchase from two food trucks: Ice Daddy and Come & Get It.
