URBANA, Ill. – While obesity is a major public health issue, the causes and consequences of obesity are complex, encompassing a multitude of physiological, emotional, and environmental factors. A program in the University of Illinois Department of Human Development and Family Studies is taking a “flip the classroom” approach to training and educating students in obesity prevention.

In recognition of the recent Illinois International Achievement Awards, ACES Study Abroad is honored to highlight Sadie Marks, recipient of the Undergraduate Achievement Award. This award recognizes one University of Illinois undergraduate student “for their significant service and contribution resulting from their participation in an international study abroad course, program, or project.”

College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences student Austin Schorfheide, a sophomore majoring in agricultural economics with a concentration in public policy and law, has been selected as a 2019 Cargill Global Scholar. He is one of three University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students to be selected for the program this year.

The prestigious Cargill Global Scholars Program, a distinctive international scholarship program that began in 2013, offers a scholarship award of $2,500 per year for up to two years.

URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois Board of Higher Education this month approved a new undergraduate degree combining computer sciences and animal sciences at the University of Illinois. Incoming freshmen can enroll in the program, known as CS + Animal Sciences, starting in the fall of 2021.

Although summer could be seen as a time to slow down after the semester and find a break in the action, many students instead take advantage of the time away from the university to pursue a study abroad program. Summer is another opportunity to connect with an increasingly global environment, learn more about other cultures, and build new relationships while earning academic course credit. During summer 2019, 85 College of ACES students were able to participate in summer programs across four continents.  

URBANA, Ill. – Ten-day numbers are in, and undergraduate enrollment in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois continues to rise, adding to a record-breaking year of enrollment at U of I.  

New freshman enrollment in the College of ACES is at 538 for fall 2019, compared to 512 at this time last year, with 2,801 total undergraduate enrollment for the college in fall 2019, compared to 2,631 last year.

URBANA, Ill. – Before gifting her farmland to the University of Illinois in the early 2000s, and long after she had moved from Illinois, Lora Sims recounted that she was once advised to sell off her Montgomery County land.

But Sims didn’t want to sell the farm that had been such an important part of her family. Lora’s mother, Adelaide “Addie” Colvin Sims, owned the land and then left it to Lora and her siblings. That decision has now positively impacted hundreds of University of Illinois students.

Growing up in Silicon Valley, Krti Tallam was steeped in a culture that equated success with personal wealth and getting ahead. But that didn’t sit right with her.

“As grateful as I was to grow up there, I was bombarded by a sense that you need to be in tech to be successful,” she says. “It bothered me that we have 7 billion people in the world and we’re teaching them to look out for themselves, not do anything for the planet.”

The Office of International Programs in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) has initiated the Global Food Security Fellows Program to support exceptional students who are interested in conducting food-related research in a developing country. The first cohort of Fellows included four ACES graduate students and three undergraduates. These Fellows will be sharing their experiences on the Voices of ACES blog.  

URBANA, Ill. — Thirteen University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students and young alumni, including two from the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, were offered student Fulbright grants to pursue international educational, research, and teaching experiences across the globe this coming year, and another seven Illinois students were named Fulbright alternates.
