Engineering projects go virtual in creative classrooms

URBANA, Ill. ­– When the University of Illinois shifted all classes to online instruction after spring break to help protect people from the coronavirus, everyone had to adapt to new circumstances. But it was especially challenging for professors whose courses feature a large hands-on component.

Students in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) at U of I are required to take ABE 469, Industry-Linked Design Project, during their senior year.

ACES International announces 2020 Undergraduate Global Food Security Scholars

To encourage and support ACES undergraduate students to pursue work related to food and nutritional security in low and middle income countries, the ACES Office of International Programs has launched the Global Food Security Scholars internship program.

Five talented and motivated ACES undergraduate students have been selected to receive salary support for an approved on-campus internship during spring semester 2020. Selected scholars will also receive up to $1500 to support the costs of participating in an international travel experience that is associated with the internship.

Program prepares students to take on challenge of obesity prevention

URBANA, Ill. – While obesity is a major public health issue, the causes and consequences of obesity are complex, encompassing a multitude of physiological, emotional, and environmental factors. A program in the University of Illinois Department of Human Development and Family Studies is taking a “flip the classroom” approach to training and educating students in obesity prevention.

Sadie Marks receives Illinois International Undergraduate Achievement Award

Agricultural economics student selected as a 2019 Cargill Global Scholar

College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences student Austin Schorfheide, a sophomore majoring in agricultural economics with a concentration in public policy and law, has been selected as a 2019 Cargill Global Scholar. He is one of three University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students to be selected for the program this year.

The prestigious Cargill Global Scholars Program, a distinctive international scholarship program that began in 2013, offers a scholarship award of $2,500 per year for up to two years.

New Illinois degree addresses growth of technology in animal sciences

URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois Board of Higher Education this month approved a new undergraduate degree combining computer sciences and animal sciences at the University of Illinois. Incoming freshmen can enroll in the program, known as CS + Animal Sciences, starting in the fall of 2021.

Eighty-five ACES students participate in summer education abroad programs

Although summer could be seen as a time to slow down after the semester and find a break in the action, many students instead take advantage of the time away from the university to pursue a study abroad program. Summer is another opportunity to connect with an increasingly global environment, learn more about other cultures, and build new relationships while earning academic course credit. During summer 2019, 85 College of ACES students were able to participate in summer programs across four continents.

College of ACES enrollment up for fall 2019 semester

URBANA, Ill. – Ten-day numbers are in, and undergraduate enrollment in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois continues to rise, adding to a record-breaking year of enrollment at U of I.  

New freshman enrollment in the College of ACES is at 538 for fall 2019, compared to 512 at this time last year, with 2,801 total undergraduate enrollment for the college in fall 2019, compared to 2,631 last year.

Montgomery County farmland gift provides opportunities for ACES students

URBANA, Ill. – Before gifting her farmland to the University of Illinois in the early 2000s, and long after she had moved from Illinois, Lora Sims recounted that she was once advised to sell off her Montgomery County land.

But Sims didn’t want to sell the farm that had been such an important part of her family. Lora’s mother, Adelaide “Addie” Colvin Sims, owned the land and then left it to Lora and her siblings. That decision has now positively impacted hundreds of University of Illinois students.

ACES Fulbright scholar tackles emerging infectious diseases in India

Growing up in Silicon Valley, Krti Tallam was steeped in a culture that equated success with personal wealth and getting ahead. But that didn’t sit right with her.

“As grateful as I was to grow up there, I was bombarded by a sense that you need to be in tech to be successful,” she says. “It bothered me that we have 7 billion people in the world and we’re teaching them to look out for themselves, not do anything for the planet.”
