Graduate student works towards conserving frogs in Madagascar

After a certain point, Madagascar’s Route National 35 is only maintained by the drivers of the vehicles who attempt it–dirt bikes carrying passengers (“taxi motos”) and aged mog-style trucks on their way to pick up sacs of rice or bulk rock. Some days there are only two or three vehicles inching their way along the last stretches of red mud. Often, they get stuck, sometimes for weeks.

A study led by researchers at the Agroecosystem Sustainability Center (ASC) and the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign quantifies the soil organic carbon (SOC) benefits from cover crops in maize-soybean rotations in Midwestern U.S. agroecosystems.

How diet quality affects the gut microbiota to promote health

URBANA, Ill. – We know that eating a healthy diet affects body weight, cholesterol levels, and heart health. A new study from the University of Illinois focuses on another component: the role of diet in supporting a healthy gastrointestinal microbiota. The researchers conclude that following the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) promotes a gut microbiota composition that may support overall health.

5 things I wish I knew before coming to Illinois

Adjusting to college is a learning curve, but it can be great if you’re knowledgeable of what to expect before coming to campus. I was taken by surprise my freshmen year by the many differences between high school and college. Here are the five things I wish I knew before coming to the University of Illinois. 

 

  1. Walk your classes. 

Ensuring food security in the tropics through livestock genetic improvement is goal of symposium

Animal scientists, economists, and colleagues from the humanities and other fields met on the University of Illinois campus in April to focus on livestock in the tropics and its role in food security. 

The event marked the Seventh Annual International Food Security Symposium at Illinois facilitated by the Office of International Programs (OIP) in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES).
