Paper: Multistate foodborne illness outbreaks impact restaurant stock price, public perception

As demand for food from restaurants soars in the U.S., so does the importance in understanding the impacts of foodborne illness outbreaks. A new paper co-written by a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign expert in food marketing and food policy finds that outbreaks spanning multiple states bring swift financial losses, increased media attention and a public-relations hit that makes smaller outbreaks more financially damaging.

My journey at Illinois

When I reflect back on the beginnings of my journey at Illinois, I am so grateful for how things have played out and the position I am in now. When I was initially applying for college, I nearly didn't apply to Illinois at all. I had my heart set on going out of state for years, and because of this, I hadn't even considered making an application. Fortunately, when I told a friend this, they instantly made me question my decision and strongly advised that I reconsider. I think about that moment a lot.

This program will support the design and delivery of training activities that include a mixed cohort of university professors in the veterinary science and medicine field from one or more of the following countries (the priority countries for this NOFO): the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Training programs are designed and organized in conjunction with U.S. universities, USDA/FAS, and other government agencies. The FEP emphasizes the development of improved and updated courses and curricula, teaching and student assessment methods, exposure to current research techniques, and practical field experiences while the Fellows study in the United States. In addition, the FEP includes follow-up visits by U.S. host professors (the Mentors) to their Fellow’s home country.

The Scientific Cooperation and Research Program supports FAS’s strategic goals by mobilizing the scientific community’s accumulated knowledge and technologies through the funding of joint research, extension, and education projects. These projects are between U.S. researchers and researchers from selected emerging market economies, last up to two years, and address issues including but not limited to agricultural trade and market access, animal and plant health, biotechnology, food safety and security, climate smart agriculture, and sustainable natural resource management. Since 1980, the program has supported hundreds of projects to enhance the technical skills of agricultural professionals and help beneficiary countries further develop their relationships with the U.S. agriculture sector.

College of ACES appoints first dean to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion

Professor Elizabeth Olson will serve as the first associate dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Olson’s tenure will begin on Jan. 16, 2024, pending approval by the Board of Trustees.
