Fieldwork in Tanzania leads to finding a second home

This past summer—with funding from the ACES Office of International Programs, ACES Education Abroad, and the ACES Academy for Global Engagement—I traveled independently to Morogoro, Tanzania for one month to gather data related to agro-dealer market dynamics for my master’s thesis. Prior to my departure, I analyzed panel data representing a census of agro-dealers in this region that was collected between 2015 and 2020 by Dr. Hope Michelson, Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, and her collaborators.

Summer study in Greece brings new outlook on life

For my academic career, studying in Greece and specifically participating in the summer research internship really helped pivot my understanding of what my career could look like. Specifically, I really liked learning about the biological processes that are needed to find the right species of plant for the right climate and soil. I also learned about the physical genotypes of the different species of plants and what genotype characteristics were important for the consumer-ability of the plant.

Newly appointed Illinois CFO Paul Ellinger draws on ACES, Extension background

URBANA, Ill. – Paul Ellinger, former ACE faculty and department head, was recently appointed vice president, chief financial officer, and comptroller of the University of Illinois System, after filling the interim role since July 2021. In this position, he oversees budgeting and finance for the vast U of I system network encompassing multiple campuses, a hospital, an airport, research enterprises, and more.

More physical activity, less screen time linked to better executive function in toddlers, study finds

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — A new study explored whether adherence to American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines for diet and physical activity had any relationship with toddlers’ ability to remember, plan, pay attention, shift between tasks and regulate their own thoughts and behavior, a suite of skills known as executive function.

$30M USAID grant sees soybean innovation through the last mile in Africa

URBANA, Ill. – Last month, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a new $30 million investment in the Soybean Innovation Lab (SIL) at the University of Illinois. The competitive grant was awarded under Feed the Future, the U.S. government’s global hunger and food security initiative led by USAID.
